Spring fishing and weather proving unpredictable. . .

We have managed to get out only a few days in the past two weeks. The weather has been tough but the fishing has been exiting. There were several good catches of tuna throughout the fleet this week. Friday was slower with boats catching 3-10 tunas to the boat. A few dolphin and wahoo were encountered, there was one bigeye tuna decked also. And the Country Girl released a blue marlin.
We will be out all this weekend and next week. The forecast calls for stable weather for the next week. We have heard good reports from down south of lots of gaffer dolphin. They could show up any day. The next month can be one of the most exiting times to fish the Gulf Stream off North Carolina. Dolphin, Tuna, Wahoo and billfish will begin flooding in with the warm water. Are you ready ? ! ?

Tuna give a good showing before the blow.

Only a half a dozen boats fished on Friday. The weather forecast called for some wind. The day didn't start out too windy but we got it before it was all said and done, we got a few yellowfin tuna too. Saturday was a different day. After the rough day Friday we were ready for more big seas Saturday but it turned out beautiful. It was a bit cloudy but the winds and seas were comfortable and the fish bit pretty good too.
Saturday, there was more traffic out there Many boats fished out of all the local marinas. There were a couple of bigeye tuna boated and there was a scattered bluefin tuna as well. The yellowfin tuna fishing was good. Most boats caught a dozen or so but some had a tough day. The High Return boated eleven with sizes ranging from 20-40lbs.
The weather is really going to be bad offshore for the next three days. Really bad. Its that time of the year again. . .

Tournament Availability

Just a reminder, we are available for tournaments on the east coast. We are looking forward to fishing the Big Rock Tournament out of Morehead City,NC and the White Marlin Open out of Ocean City, MD. But we are still available for the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 which runs 8-19thru24 this year and could be fished out of Ocean City, MD or Cape May, NJ. The total purse in this will be well over $1.5 Million! The High Return could also be booked for the Ocean City Tuna Tournament in July and the Pirates Cove Tournament in August.

These tounaments are a big committment but there a heap of fun and at any moment you are just one bite away from a fish that could win a heap of cash. Call Capt' Dave if you are interested or have questions.

Well, the Weather sure has gotten tougher. The fishing slowed a little bit for the boats who made it out Monday-Thursday, but there were still some nice catches of yellowfin tuna. The wind is really going to blow hard over offshore waters on Saturday. But It will die down again and we'll be back out fishing early next week.

The great thing about it is you never know what will bite aftera big blow like this. In the spring the waters off the outer banks are teeming with both tropical and temperate oceanic species. Next week could be gangbuster fishing for big dolphins or big bluefin tuna, or both. Check back with us and we'll tell you what's happening. Or call Capt' Dave and book your date. This time of year anything could happen, and usually does. . .

Come fishing with the High Return,

We'll HOOK YOU UP ! ! !

Who cares what the groundhog says? The Gulf Stream says Spring is here! This is a composite image of the surface water temperature from satellite information. Its tilted a little but you can see the northern North Carolina coastline and the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.
For bluewater fishermen this chart is like the leaves coming out and the flowers and trees blooming to a turkey hunter--Its Time! ! ! Finally after a cold winter (though not very long!) it time to out and see what we can see and catch.
The fishing out of Oregon Inlet has been good. Yesterday, Saturday, several boats fished out of the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. Overall the fishing was great. Several boats caught their limits of Yellowfin Tuna and were back to the dock early. The yellowfins were mostly in the 25-40lb class with a few 60-80lbers mixed in. There have been a few bigeye tuna caught also. The Point Runner caught one that went 156lbs on Friday. Mixed up sizes of bluefin tuna were also caught. Three boats brought in fish in the 150-200lb class. There were also several mako sharks and wahoo boated throughout the fleet Saturday. Even the first few dolphinfish of the season have showed up this week.
That chart shows a good push of warm gulfstram water coming up. The stream seems strong this spring. It could be a great few months ahead. Get ready for bluewater fishing, come fishing with us we'd love to have you.
